Dental Crowns: An Overview

If you have a structurally damaged tooth, a crown can provide much-needed support. Custom-made to match your smile, a crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers the damaged tooth to support the structure and restore balance to your bite. Often, crowns are the final step in a root canal procedure. Other times, crowns are used to anchor a bridge, or to mask serious cosmetic flaws.

To place a crown, Dr. Lande will carefully remove the unhealthy part of your tooth and then reshape the tooth to form a firm base for the restoration. An impression of the prepared tooth is used to create the crown. After the crown is fabricated, he will place it over your tooth and make adjustments as necessary for optimal fit and feel. Finally, the crown is secured into place with dental cement.

How Are Same-day Crowns Made?

Traditional crowns are crafted in an off-site laboratory using impressions and pictures of your teeth, and require two office visits over the course of two to three weeks. With our advanced CEREC® technology, Dr. Lande can create and place a crown in a single visit. First, Dr. Lande will take digital images of your prepared teeth, which are transmitted directly into a chairside computer. The advanced software will create a three-dimensional map of your tooth that is then transferred into an in-office milling machine. With this detailed map of your smile, the milling machine can create a crown that both restores oral function and complements your features. The entire process takes about an hour. Patients relax in the office while they wait. When the crown is finished, Dr. Lande will check the fit and attach it securely to your tooth.

Benefits of Same-day Crowns

CEREC® crowns offer several important advantages over traditional crowns. Thanks to this advanced technology, you will not have to worry about temporary restorations or scheduling return visits to the dentist. CEREC crowns are also incredibly natural looking. The dental-grade porcelain has a sheen that makes the crown virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth. Additionally, these cutting-edge crowns are very strong and durable, and with proper care, they can last for many years to come.
